- Ontario 360 Added 2018-09-12★ ★ ★ ★ ★This trail is quite different from others because a part of it leads through the beach along Alona Bay. It’s a great spot to watch the waves and admire unique geological features while walking on a sandy beach. The ancient lava that helped form the Canadian Shield is evident here along with multi-coloured granite and quartz. At the river mouth there are some great fishing spots, a geocache, and abandoned structures to explore.
Alona Bay is about 1.5 hour drive from Sault Ste Marie by highway 17 north. Once you pass Alona Bay Lookout, look for a small road on your left hand side. Once you make the turn, walk or drive 100m to the shore of Lake Superior.
